ImageThis is one ruin thats unique because it never served its intended purpose. The Shoreham Nuclear Plant was conceived in 1965 and built in 1973. After a series of public relation nightmares, its fate was sealed in 1989, when it was decided not to utilize the plant.

The partial meltdown at 3-mile Island, the full meltdown at Chernobyl, and LILCO's handling of the hurricane Gloria aftermath made many Long Islanders weary of the plants opening. Protests were formed and the issue was kept alive. In the end the plant cost $6 BILLION.

Today, the plant sits unused as a reactor, its radioactive fuel removed, its turbines sold, and the rest is still visible as a monument to a failure of epic proportions.

THE SHOREHAM NUC PLANT WAS NEVER ONLINE BUT IT WAS TESTED AT 10% POWER THATS WHY IT WONT BE RECYCLED SCRAP ,BACK THEN THEY HAD ISSUES WITH NRC AND PUSHED TO GET 10% TESTING APPROVAL FIGURING IT WOULD OPEN DOOR FOR THEM TO GET FULL POWER LICENCE. BUT DUE TO ALL NEGATIVE PRESS AND COST OVERRUNS THEY WOULD NEVER WIN AGAINST THE TIDE OF OPPOSIION FROM THE PUBLIC ,ALSO AT THAT TIME TO HELP TO TRY TO TURN THE TIDE AGAINST THEM THEY PAID 100% OF ALL SCHOOL TAXES IN SHOREHAM AND THE PEOPLE STIL WANTED THEM GONE ,SHORTLY AFTER THAT LIPA TOOK OVER LILCO WHICH WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE ANSWER TO SKYROCKETING POWER PRICES AND TAXES
You can see it from a distance.
    Is this place accessible?
this page is actually inacurate in saying the plant is not used, true it is not used as a nuclear plant in fact the reactor has been dismantaled and the turbines removed and shipped to another plant, however the electrical transmition equipmant remains and is linked to to reactor in conneticut via a 330 mega watt cable the runs across the long island sound, this facility does transmit power still though the reactor its connected to is in conneticut the the reason that long island could not be sufficiantly evacuated should the reactor have a serious problem, and soon the plant will in fact go back online if it has not already done so as a wind power plant using 2 100 foot wind turbines as lipa's atempt to enter into renewable energy.
This plant was built at the exact same time by the exact same company as Zimmer Nuclear Power PLant outside of Cinicnnati Ohio. Like this plant it also was never commissioned. Both plants were an outdated design called open loop generation where the cooling water also powered the turbines so everything was dirty ( radioactive mildly to severe depending on normal or abnormal operations. It was wise not to open them but would have been wiser to have started with what was state of the art for time instead of 30 year old technology even back then. Great pictures.
    what a waste...
why hasn't the plant been salvaged for scrap metal?
Is this like being a "little pregnant"? It is what it is!
I agree with Michael. There is a big difference between the inflammatory statement "meltdown" and the restated factual account of a partial meltdown with very small off-site releases of radioactivity. I respect you for reluctantly owning up.
There WAS indeed a MELTDOWN at Three Mile Island. According to the United Sates Nuclear Regulatory Commission ( http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/3mile-isle.html ): "The sequence of certain events – equipment malfunctions, design-related problems and worker errors – led to a partial meltdown of the TMI?2 reactor core but only very small off?site releases of radioactivity." The articles here are all thoroughly researched and I don't appreciate your stating that they are not. Thank you.
In general, I'm OK with your commentary. However, there was no "meltdown" at Three Mile Island. Please correct your commentary so that it is accurate. You should research what actually happened at Three Mile Island. Thank you.
